Vlad Mykhnenko is Associate Professor of Sustainable Urban Development and Research Fellow at St Peter’s College, University of Oxford. He is an economic geographer, working on a range of issues relating to urban and regional economic development.
Over the past twenty years, he has published extensively on Ukraine’s coal and steel industries, on the political economy of post-communism: the Ukrainian Donbas and Polish Upper Silesia in transition, on east European cities, and on the causes and consequences of the war in eastern Ukraine, including the hidden tragedy of internal displacement, following the Russian occupation of Crimea and Donbas regions in 2014.
Most recently, he has given oral evidence in public to the House of Commons, in connection with the Foreign Affairs Committee’s inquiry into the challenges of Recovery in Ukraine. Currently, he is giving advice to the Mayor of Mariupol and the City Council on Mariupol Reborn – a post-war revival strategy for the city.
He was born and raised in the city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine and used to spend every summer holiday with his family on the sea coast in and around of Mariupol. His five relatives in the city have been missing since 28th February 2022.
